Agriculture in Chenango County:

Dairy farming is the predominant agricultural industry in this rural county although there are an equal number of smaller part-time, non-dairy livestock, vegetable crop, and maple syrup enterprises interspersed across the countryside. Often overlooked as an integral part of the agricultural industry are the horticultural/floricultural businesses that provide plants and services for home landscaping.

Agriculture Information:

Chenango County ranks 10th in New York State Dairy with approximately 290 farms and 21,500 cows utilizing 35% of the land. Corn silage and hay/haylage are the primary forages grown. Farm businesses exist in and contribute to the economy of every township. Major production areas lie along the 3 major river valleys — Chenango, Unadilla, and Otselic — which correspond to NYS routes 12, 8, and 26 respectively. In addition, many successful farm operations dot the hillside landscape, thus adding to the peaceful, scenic beauty of the area. Farming provides much of the support of the natural wildlife of the area, especially the white tail deer and wild turkey, which makes this area attractive for the wildlife enthusiasts.

Agriculture Employment:

Full-time agricultural employment within the county is estimated to be near 760 jobs (owners and employees) involved with agricultural production. Another 590 people derive some income from part-time farming, and another 224 jobs are associated with agriculture through service and support businesses.
